The collections span the period from the 16th century to the 21st century, with a focus on the southern African region, but also including some material on East Africa, the islands in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans and on the African continent as a whole.
The subjects range across aspects of history – travel and exploration, political and military, social, ethnographic, missionaries, biography – and also natural history.
