THE BRENTHURST LIBRARY

The Brenthurst Library houses the Africana collection of the Oppenheimer family in Johannesburg. In the early twentieth century, Sir Ernest Oppenheimer became keenly interested in the history of southern Africa and started collecting manuscripts and rare books.  Under the aegis of his son, Harry Oppenheimer, the Library expanded and developed into an internationally-recognized institution. In addition, The Brenthurst Press was established to publish fine limited editions on the history and natural history of southern Africa.  Mary Slack continues her late father's great interest and involvement in the Library and the Press.
